Veteran Student FAQs

(Chapter 31 and 33 only)

Students are responsible for enrolling in the correct amount of credits and sections of courses for the level of MHA that is expected.

• To qualify for FULL Housing:
  1. Enroll in what VA considers full time enrollment
  2. At least one course must be considered resident training. Contact a Walsh SCO to verify that your courses are considered resident by VA.
  3. Be 100% eligible for the GI Bill®

• To qualify for ANY Housing:
  1. Enroll in what VA considers to be over half time
  2. If all of your courses in a term are distance learning, you will receive 50% of the national average.

• Please inform a Walsh SCO if your benefits are exhausted. You are responsible for any payment owed to the College. Payment Information:
  • Students using the GI Bill® have a payment due date extension, which is the payment due date of the subsequent semester.
  • Regardless of whether VA pays Walsh or you directly, please check your account regularly to make sure it is paid in full by the due date mentioned above.

You will only want to enroll in courses that are part of your approved program and are required for graduation.

• VA will pay for courses that were not successfully completed and must be repeated to graduate.
• VA will not pay for courses that were successfully completed and retaken for a higher grade (unless the higher grade is needed to graduate).
• Please inform a Walsh SCO of changes to your enrollment in writing and include the last date of attendance. Housing and tuition benefits are only paid for the days that you are enrolled in courses.
• If Walsh does not receive benefit payments for any reason, the student is responsible for all costs associated with admission and enrollment at the College.
• Students using the GI Bill® have a payment due date extension which is the payment due date of the subsequent semester.

Dropping a Course

We urge all students to contact the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs at 1-888-442-4551 before you drop from a course to determine the impact it will have on allowances, book stipend, and tuition & fees.

Dropping a course removes the course from your transcript.

• A dropped course offers a tuition refund of 50% or 100% (see the Student Catalog for further information).
• VA will only pay for the dates you are enrolled in a course.
• Dropping courses may cause an overpayment of tuition and/or housing payments. If a dropped course changes your rate of pursuit (e.g. full to half time) it may also reduce your housing payment, or you may not be entitled to one at all.

Withdrawing from a Course

We urge all students to contact the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs at 1-888-442-4551 before you withdraw from a course to determine the impact it will have on allowances, book stipend, and tuition & fees.

Withdrawing from a course results in a “W” grade on your transcript, and the tuition and fees are owed to Walsh.

You may submit mitigating circumstances to a Walsh SCO and VA. Mitigating circumstances are circumstances beyond the student’s control that prevent the student from continuing in school or cause the student to reduce credits (ex: illness or death in immediate family, unavoidable change in conditions of employment, etc.). VA will contact you regarding mitigating circumstances once Walsh reports your withdrawal.

Deployment

If you are deployed or have military orders that affect your ability to complete enrolled courses, we may be able to help you with one of the following options:

• Work with your instructor to complete your courses either before you leave or within 30 days of the term ending.
• Drop or withdraw from the courses with a tuition refund.
• See the Student Catalog for further details regarding deployment.
  1. Drop means full or partial tuition will be refunded, and the course will not be on your transcript.
  2. Withdrawal means a “W” appears on your transcript and tuition is still owed to Walsh.
