Health Care Leader: Vijay Sahore
Realizing the American Dream — and Paying It Forward
Vijay Sahore is the founder and CEO of Assured Senior Living Group, a Southfield-based company specializing in assisted living, hospice, and skilled home health care.
Sahore immigrated to the United States in 1984 in pursuit of the American Dream. Full of vigor and passion, he soon realized that his degree in business from India would not be recognized in the United States. While looking for employment, he came across Walsh College, and he set his goal of achieving a degree from the college to further his career. He started working at restaurants to save money to pay for his education and provide for his family. He fondly remembers his first job at a chain restaurant, Big Boy, and how he dreamed of owning one of his own in the future. Barely making minimum wage, Sahore put away every cent he could.
While working lengthy hours at restaurants, caring for two young girls and a wife, and acclimating to a new country, Sahore started a part-time program at Walsh College. He could only afford a couple of classes at a time, but that did not deter him. His efforts and tireless work ethic paid off, and in 1989, he obtained a Master of Science in Finance degree. More than a degree, he learned real-life applications from his professors. “They have a different knowledge of things,” Sahore notes. “I remember taking a class in banking, and the instructor said, ‘When you get out of here, don’t look for a job. Take it to the next level. You’re a superstar.’”
With his Master of Science in Finance degree, Sahore could obtain a job as an accountant for a skilled home health care company. After gaining experience, he decided to put his entrepreneurial skills to the test and open a physical therapy rehabilitation clinic a few years later. In 1997, he branched out into skilled home health care and, over the years, has owned multiple skilled home health care companies. Things came full circle when Sahore eventually purchased two Big Boy restaurants in Ann Arbor, proving that dreams do come true with hard work, humility, and dedication.
The years that followed proved that Sahore was quite the entrepreneur in the senior living industry. He has opened multiple assisted living facilities throughout Michigan. More recently, in 2018, he acquired a senior independent living facility in Royal Oak and converted it to a licensed assisted and memory care facility. Today, Assured Senior Living Group focuses on assisted living, hospice care, and skilled home health care.
Sahore attributes much of his success to his Walsh College education, as he felt that the professors had a genuine interest in his success. He feels that he has a duty to mentor his employees, and it is no surprise that he has had many work for him for over 20 years. Sahore is committed to paying it forward, and over the years, he has made it a priority to provide time, jobs, and financial support to those who may have faced the same obstacles he did. More than a successful businessman, Sahore is a respected member of the Indian community; a dedicated father, husband, and grandfather; and an example of the American Dream.
