Statement on the Passing of Robert Naftaly
Walsh College mourns the loss of Robert H. Naftaly, a distinguished alumnus, trustee emeritus, and respected business and civic leader. Mr. Naftaly passed away on November 3rd, leaving behind a legacy of exemplary service, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to the community.
Robert Naftaly earned his diploma in accounting from Walsh Institute in 1959 and later became an influential member of the Walsh College Board of Trustees. His leadership and strategic vision played a significant role in advancing the college’s mission and enhancing opportunities for our students. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to business and education, Walsh College awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2014, where he also served as our commencement speaker, sharing his wisdom and inspiring the next generation of leaders.
Beyond his profound impact on Walsh College, Mr. Naftaly had an impressive career as CEO of Blue Care Network, CFO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and independent chairman of the UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust, where he was instrumental in ensuring the financial stability and health benefits of hundreds of thousands of retirees.
Mr. Naftaly’s influence extended to countless community organizations, including the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, Wayne State University, and numerous corporate and non-profit boards. He was a mentor to many, offering guidance with compassion, insight, and a commitment to uplifting others.

Bob’s impact on Walsh College and his legacy of mentorship and service will continue to inspire us for years to come.”
